The Peninsula New York – Midtown Hotels

The Peninsula is a luxury hotel located in Midtown Manhattan. With just one entrance, an intimate reception, and elegant, individually decorated rooms, The Peninsula manages to convey high-end comfort minus the rococo fanfare of many of its midtown neighbors. Popular with both corporate and leisure travelers, the hotel is part of the Hong Kong-based Peninsula Hotels, which also has properties in Chicago and Beverly Hills. Subtle nods to this Asian connection include lovely lacquered armoires in many rooms and a high tea similar to the Hong Kong location’s traditional service. Guests at the Peninsula are well aware that every room means a cocoon of quiet, a shelter from the storm of the city. Iconic landmarks are within reach at the hotel, from MoMa to Central Park and Rockefeller Center.

Features and Amenities

Located in a landmark 1905 Beaux Arts building, The Peninsula was extensively renovated in 1998 and continues to be upgraded as needed; as a result, it’s one of the most high-tech historic hotels, featuring bed-side control panels to manage music, temperature and lighting; separate modem, phone, fax and T1 lines; plasma TVs with memory card readers in all rooms; and TVs and hands-free phones by all bathtubs.

Ranging from well-sized Standards and Deluxes to six levels of suites, rooms are done-up in a mix of warm beiges and antique gold accents; all have double-paned windows to keep din to a minimum. From comfortable beds to marble bathrooms, relaxation comes standard at the Peninsula. You’ll find 42″ flat screen televisions and dark wood furniture complimented by luxurious upholstery and linen. You’ll even find TVs in the bathroom – so you can catch up on your favorite shows while you take a bubble bath. The hotel also boasts a variety of sun-drenched, luxurious suites.

A three-floor spa and gym with swimming pool, whirlpool and extensive sundeck, plus a separate rooftop bar, are rare luxuries among New York hotels. The hotel boasts a bright and new fitness facility offering the latest in cardio and strength training equipment, as well as a sunlit yoga studio. Personal trainers are on hand to offer one on one training, and can design custom fitness programs for longer term guests. The decor is serene and Zen, from bamboo floors and teak accents to natural ambient lighting designed to accent the skyline views. A serene, glass-enclosed pool is a major selling point, with poolside dining available at all times. The Peninsula Spa by ESPA is a rooftop oasis offering Asian, European and Ayurvedic philosophies, and offers body and facial treatments from massages to wraps.

Jumeirah Essex House – Columbus Circle Hotels

Jumeirah Essex House is a luxury hotel located on the cusp of Midtown and the Upper West Side of Manhattan, towering over Columbus Circle. Celebrating over 75 years of luxury on Central Park South, the historic Jumeirah Essex House first opened its gilded doors in 1931. This Manhattan landmark has recently completed a $90 million refurbishment program that pays homage to its classic Art Deco heritage. Jumeirah Essex House is nestled between the beauty of Central Park and the buzz of Broadway. Enjoy the hotel’s stylish setting, and surround yourself in the elegance that has lured dignitaries, celebrities and world leaders to this exclusive hotel for years.

Features and Amenities

As one of the city’s premier Art-Deco masterpieces of the 1930s, Jumeirah Essex House selected the Atlanta-based design firm Hirsch Bedner Associates to handle the hotel’s redesign on all levels. Their design approach was to respect the hotel’s historically significant Art-Deco details and flourishes, upgrading the guest rooms, suites, lobby and corridors to five-star status.

During the hotel’s refurbishment, all guest rooms and suites were renovated. The decor throughout the rooms captures the ‘glory days’ of the ‘Golden Age of Travel’ of the 1920s and 1930s, whilst providing the very latest in comfort and technology. Guest room interior design features include plush golden carpets, deep red velvets, alligator-print leather accents, wall-to-wall wood cabinetry units offering ample desk and drawer space, rich red leather-framed mirrors, hammered nail studs on a white leather ottoman gracing the front of the beds, and window blinds featuring a leaf pattern evocative of the trees in Central Park. Guest room technology design features include HD LCD flat Panel TVs, a touch-screen control pad, custom-programmed color-changing LED fixture that you can change to create a variety of moods, and ‘stumble lights’ underneath nightstands.

The renovation has also revealed the Lobby Lounge, where you can enjoy a savory selection of culinary delights, including appetizers, entrée and sandwiches, in a setting of Art-Deco style and ambiance. Sumptuous white leather banquettes, tucked away in a richly-appointed burgundy-draped alcove featuring faux crystal beaded table lamps with chrome accents, reminiscent of the 1920s, make for a convivial and lounge-like environment in a lobby setting. Rich burgundy and amethyst-colored satin pillows adorn the lobby’s oversized cream-colored leather sofas, and exude both comfort and design versatility.

Dining options include The Dining Room at South Gate, which offers distinctive and seasonally-inspired fare. Chef Heffernan partners with local organic farms, fishermen, & shellfish harvesters to ensure that he has the finest and freshest ingredients with which to prepare his ever-evolving menu.

The hotel also features a spa with a fully equipped fitness center open 24 hours  a day, men’s and women’s relaxation lounges, steam rooms and saunas and personal soaking tubs. The Spa at Jumeirah Essex House provides everything you need to revive your senses and help your cares slip away. The spa features Sodashi treatments, including massages, facials and more. Yoga classes, Pilates instructors and personal trainers are available at the fitness center.
